Uploading A Ride
This topic describes how to upload a ride to the system. KOM Informatics accepts .fit files which have power meter data. As of 4/10/2022 the system also accepts .tcx fies. .fit is a Garmin file format. .fit is is a compact, binary file format used by every head unit we've ever encountered. First you need to get the .fit file you're interested in uploading onto the desktop or laptop where you will be running KOM Informatics (please note that file uploads are not supported on IOS mobile). There are 3 main ways to accomplish this:
A. The newest way to upload rides is via the KOM Informatics Garmin Uploader app which leverages Garmin Connect to enable automatic sync of your rides from your Garmin device to your KOM Informatics account. For more information see the Garmin Connect Sync help topic. After you've authorized Garmin to sync your rides you can also utilize the Ride Backfill Request Utility to load rides from past years. As of this writing Backfill only works with Garmin Connect. For more information see the Ride Backfill Request Utility help topic.
B. The second newest way to upload rides is via the KOM Informatics Wahoo Uploader app which leverages the Wahoo Cloud API to enable automatic sync of your rides from your ELEMNT to your KOM Informatics account. For more information see the Wahoo Cloud Sync help topic.
B. The second way is to turn on and plug in your head unit (Garmin or Wahoo ELEMNT etc) to your computer using the manufacturer supplied USB cable. The device will appear as a USB external hard drive on your computer's files. Make sure the head unit has finished booting up before you do this. The following instructions are for Windows 10 and Garmin but they should be similar for other operating systems and devices.
- Click on the File icon to bring up the File Explorer.
- Locate Garmin on the left hand panel and double click on it. The right hand panel will display the top level files and directories on your Garmin.
- Double click on the Garmin Folder. The right hand panel will display all of the folder's files and directories.
- Double click on the Activities folder. The right hand panel will display all of your .fit files that represent your rides.
- Click on the ride you're interested in. Copy the file and paste it in a location you'll remember on your local hard drive.
C. The third main way is if you subscribe to another service such as Garmin Connect or Strava you can download your original .fit file. The following instructions are for Garmin Connect and Windows. After logging in to Garmin Connect:
- On the left hand panel click Activities. Activities will display in the right hand panel.
- Click on the rides title to display the detail for that ride.
- Click on the Gear icon to bring up the "More" context menu.
- Click on the Export Original to download your .fit file. It will be enclosed in a .Zip file. You want to Save File from the dialog box.
- Open your downloads directory and cut and paste the .zip file into another directory.
- Right click on the .zip file in the new directory and extract the .fit file from the .zip file.
Then, in KOM Informatics, from the main menu click the [Rides] [Add Ride] menu selection, or click the Add Ride link on the page footer. The Add Ride page will display.
- Click the [Browse] button to select a .fit ride file to upload. Selecting a file from the ensuing dialog box will trigger the file upload process.
- Once the file reaches the server and begins processing, the progress bar, and step description and status will keep you apprised of the load's progress.
- When the ride is finished processing, A hyperlinked message "All done, check out the New Ride" will appear. Click on the hyperlink to view the new ride.
